Mecha/Orga is the project and recording name of Greek sound artist Yiorgis Sakellariou, a self-taught musician working in the arenas of computer music and field recordings. Having a background in classical and folk (Mediterranean) music, he came to develop his personal language during the ’00s. Since then, he has been active internationally being responsible for solo albums, having composed music for short films and theatrical performances, leading workshops and ceaselessly performing his music around the globe.

His practice is founded on the digital manipulation of environmental recordings. His palette of sounds is all-encompassing; from vibrating rail-tracks to refrigerators’ static, and from noisy waterfalls to the humming of insects, all may find their place in his arsenal. He only performs in absolute darkness, fostering an all-inclusive and profoundly submerging sonic experience. Also a member of the Athenian Contemporary Music Research Centre (founded by I. Xenakis) and of the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers’ Association. Since 2004 he runs the label Echomusic.

can you identify these stage-lights?

ok, a weird post this one, but you’d be doing our friends at orila a big favour if you could identify the stage-lights pictured below. Affectionately known as the “ET” stage-lights, they are often used in concerts, but we have no clue what make or model they are:

you can see them from different angles here: flickr photoset

if you have any clues, please contact ‘info at orila net’. A selection of Greek islands are available for trade

Mai Pen Rai, frog sounds from Bali & Thailand on vinyl; from orila & rekem

Mai Pen Rai
orl 07 / rekem 02

Thai & Balinese frog rock field recordings
7” (pressed on a 12″ platter) and eco sky lantern
packed in a custom-made, silk-screened frog rock tote bag.

-

Mai Pen Rai is an edition of two releases in one, or how two random recordings of a travelogue fit together and after a four year journey are finally released…

the first and the third track of the record capture the experience of Maya Lavda in the summer 2008 during a trip to Bali, where, while shooting with her video camera she noticed frog sounds behind a closed door which she followed to record with her camera. Revisited after the trip, these sounds revealed themselves fitting for a mantra-like locked groove record.

the second track comes from orila’s journey in Thailand over the summer of 2009. Following an after-storm quest for the sound – that a permanent resident jokingly referred to as the sounds produced by water buffaloes – the true origin revealed itself within a scene of majestic nature. In remembrance of this experience, every copy of this release is accompanied by a Thai sky lantern.

as the passion for the frogs was growing both in orila and rekem we decided to unite these findings in the form of a 7″ cut on a 12” plate. This way, these recordings would not only remind us of the actual journey(s), but also the ideas around which a substantial part of our lives evolved through the last four years.

And they lived happily ever after

summer reviewed: matteus – ugly doll’s stories (on orila)

another gem from orila. hidden behind the insanely special edition made out of forged copper plates, industrial bronzed screws and black cardbord envelopes, is the first full-length out there to feature the songwriting brilliance of the artist known as Matteus. Unsettling and alienating (though its weird enough in its expressiveness to also alienate folks who think they dig “weird” and “unsettling” music), Matteus’ music is one that would normally just bear the tag of “experimental” on its shoulders, but instead takes one step forward and puts the strange world of human expressivenes and storytelling front and forward. Stories to dive deep into

introducing orila / Ku – Ping Pong Show

introducing orila… I should have introduced orila a long time ago. orila is the ‘online phonographic workshop’ (rough translation) set up by yiannis iasonidis and specialising on guerilla concepts of record-releasing. Blank cdrs with to burn your downloadable music on; check. Special, unmarketable 3″ covers for the special edition, while you market the clear plastic sleeve edition; check. “Regular” cdr edition where each 10 copies or so have a different bit added to the cover because the label boss got new ideas in between; check. Amazing record sleeves that get constructed before the actual music gets recorded; check. Needless to say, we love orila, and it’s silly that we haven’t professed our love to orila all this time. I’m sorry orila, sometimes i get distracted.

Now comes the Ku edition. In two handmade versions, one a cool tape edition and the other a really out-there tape+decorated walkman edition, ready to listen to. Insane levels of cool of course. Did i mention that you can also just choose to download the thing?

the music contained is (as hinted) by Ku, aka Dimitris Papadatos. It was played live on an e-radio show, and comes “filled with obsessions, burst outs and romance. Kraut inflictions, dark vocals, drones and high frequencies transforming to birds.”
