electronics musician Giannis Kotsonis presents an electroacoustic/noise suite under his ‘Sister Overdrive’ alias, while zither player Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga “graduates” from her duo with Ferran Fages, ‘ap’strophe’, to give us her uncompromising solo debut in the form of ‘Stroke by Stroke’.

digging deeper, Sister Overdrive’s ‘Honey’ is made out of electroacoustic and concrete sources, thickly processed through Kotsonis’ laptop to produce and unfold a most engaging sequence of events. On ‘Honey’, his work thrives on harsh textures and elemental qualities of sound, offering in the process a most immersive and rich abstract work.

‘Stroke by Stroke’ is not for the faint of heart either. Those expecting gentle plucking to emerge from her zither will be surprised, to say the least. Chatzigoga uses objects, preparations, e-bows and other tools to extract large and confronting soundscapes from her instrument, and here she lays down, track by track, different combinations of techniques, contrasted with each other in the context of the album while at the same time laying them against the ambient sounds of the city -which she sublty allows to slip through to the recording. What results is a poetic and suggestive work that serves as the best introduction yet to Chatzigoga’s soundworld.

word on the street is there is a new release on ‘organized music from thessaloniki’. Other than the rare appearance of two maverick musicians (handmade electronics wizz, Michael Johnsen and sound-stalker Pascal Battus) in an excellent set of on-the-spot music making, it is also significant in that this new release comes in a tape & digital edition. See, organized music will be doing a few cassette editions in the near future, but is also starting to make its catalog available for download through the bandcamp platform (click here to visit the ‘organized music from thessaloniki’ bandcamp page). So now there’s space both for format fetichism and for 21st century convenience. It’s a win-win thing

oh, and the music? Nothing short of amazing. Intuitive improvisations using a network of handmade electronics and a saw for Johnsen, and standalone guitar pick-ups for Battus, the results are at times alien, emotive, spellbinding and unpredictable

organized music from thessaloniki t12
7″ edition
300 copies

there is a new release out on organized music from thessaloniki, though it’s a little bit different than what you’d initially expect.

this one comes in vinyl first of all, a gorgeous little 7″ ep with 9 songs. Now i said songs, and usually you’d expect long stretches of electroacoustics from this label, but on this release the focus is on a brilliant greek songwriter, Angelos kyriou. Well known in the small-scale-gig circle of athens for the past few years (as well as through his blog, from where he usually shares his music) for his idiosyncratic short tunes, quirky lyrics, and unique in-your-face effect of what he does, he has nevertheless refused to play himself up and emerge as some sort of faux-underground indie-king and it’s only now that his music begins to appear on ‘traditional’ fixed media, though we’ve had him in our mp3 players for some time now. Having had his music and his uncanny observations wash through our daily lives for some time now, we’ve decided to share some of it with you. It’s a personal trip, but few remain unmoved.

epelxi contains an eclectic cut out of Angelos’ songbook. Everything you need to know about it, and everything it takes to make it yours, is here: http://thesorg.noise-below.org/2/?p=392

If you need a better description of his work (and you’re fluent in greek), you won’t find a better one than in the piece m.hulot (eminent greek blogger and occasional dabbler in the overground press) wrote about the artist and the record in this post on his blog.

to our greek readers: the 7″ is available locally (as is almost every other thes.org release) through good indie record stores in thessaloniki (lotus, wax records) and athens (vinyl microstore, a strange attractor)

angelos’ blog can be found here: http://angeloskyriou.blogspot.com/

-

incidentally, angelos & fellow traveller ‘κτίρια τη νύχτα’ (buildings at night) are playing live at knot gallery in athens tomorrow

our mailing lists are down

having less time to dedicate on the site these past few months, i only recently realised that the database behind our mailing lists has ceased to function. This means that both the ‘absurd’ and the ‘organized music from thessaloniki’ labels’ mailing lists are not in operation. I have tried in vain to fix this problem, but at the moment i cannot even salvage the subscribers’ email addresses. Which means that those people who will not read this entry, might have to wait a long time befor they receive anything new from those lists. My apologies for this.

For the time being, you are encouraged to subscribe to this blog’s RSS feed as an alternative. It will contain any info that would have apeared in those lists, as well as other news from related labels and artists. Or just keep an eye on our pages, the old-fashioned way.

Even though i myself still favor mailing lists and their succinct notifications, maybe this will prove to be a way forward since more and more people today seem to depend on automatic notifications. I’m afraid we don’t have another choice for now

this is the second album from the international quartet of Burkhard Beins, Lucio Capece, Rhodri Davies & Toshimaru Nakamura; it is a particularly engrossing listen, recorded live and presented here for your aural pleasure. SLW, the name of the group, stands for ‘Sounds Like Water’ and it’s an analogy that describes pretty well the flow and the sheer presence of this music. Beyond boundaries, listen loud and often.
