kostis kilymis: events in london & oxford

as the editor for this site, i sometimes (more often recently, truth be told) get to write bits about my own activities as well. Kostis Kilymis – I stayed in this room for a year (meditations on sonic space)

[SULLY MONTHLY EVENT – April 2012 - Find out more about what is Sully]

Where: The Courtyard Theatre, Bowling Green Walk 40, London N1 6EU
Next event: Monday 23rd April 2012
Time: 7:30pm-11pm
Entry is free

For this month’s Sully, Kostis Kilymis will be presenting some of his recent video work. The pieces shown are built through a detached relationship between seeing and listening, and investigate issues of place and our experience of it. There will also be a short audio presentation, demonstrating how this approach has emerged as a result of earlier forays into sound and installation work.

syndromes, live in milan

syndromes (Kostis Kilymis), is performing live in milan this tuesday, january 10, at ‘the lift’

>> milano, the lift; 10/1/12, 9pm; by reservation only: liftthe1 [at] gmail com

Kostis Kilymis is an artist focusing on electroacoustic phenomena and the place these find within the auditory process. He creates sound using feedback systems, filtering the input of his surroundings as well as the sounds of electronic equipment under various levels of misuse. He also amplifies their effects through traditional mixing and recording techniques. He performs solo and in collaboration (with Lucio Capece, Nikos Veliotis, Leif Elggren, Patrick Farmer amongst others) and has exhibited installation work in Athens, Greece. He has been active since 2006 and on his spare time he runs the ‘organized music from thessaloniki’ label.

If Other People Exist (then they are totally sealed secrets)

remember the bye-bye butterfly fest in Xanthi last december? if you recall, there were some ups and downs in the end regarding the line-up, largely due to the large disruption of flights over europe during those days. well, one thing this led to was a last minute pairing for the last slot of the night, which brought Leif Elggren -who had only brought his voice and his presence to the festival, together with local electronics manipulator Kostis Kilymis (aka: syndromes) for a one-off set that lasted a brief 14 minutes, but was such a blast that no one really asked for more.

well, seeing that the particular set signalled the last actual sounds to come out of the legendary absurd carcass, and seeing of course that the music was so good, a triple handshake took place the very next day agreeing to press the whole thing on some trusty old vinyl. Leif’s firework edition records and Nicolas Malevitsis’ excrete music decided to do the honours, Kostis did some micro-editing to remove unwanted detrius, Giuseppe Ielasi took up the mastering and a half a year after the day, here it is:

IF OTHER PEOPLE EXIST then they are totally sealed secrets
KOSTIS KILYMIS  LEIF ELGGREN

1-sided 12″
edition of 200

Kostis Kilymis – electronics, objects
Leif Elggren – voice, text and dance

“I now feel – when listening to the recording – like we opened a dark negative window in that respectful old event hall, for the 14 minutes we played. Like corpses and spirits marching through, only to be sucked back at the press of a pause button.” Kostis Kilymis

Recorded live at ‘spiti politismou – f.e.x.’ on december the 4th 2010 during absurd’s farewell edition (absurd #84) ‘bye bye butterfly’
Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi

nn+ soundcheck @ knot gallery

maybe you remember how a couple of months ago the noise-below crew participated as “nn+” in the tot festival that took place at knot gallery in athens (related posts here, here and here). well, nicolas already wrote about the whole thing, and today i wrote about it on my own blog (because you can never have enough of those…) here:

http://syndromesrandomcontent.blogspot.com/2010/08/nn-soundcheck.html

i also put up a recording of myself fumbling with the available equipment during the soundcheck. i ended up with a charming piece of noise + room ambience

enjoy,
kostis

nn+ @ knot gallery, 25/06/10. part 2

nn+ @ knot gallery, 25/06/10 [absurd self-cancelation, part 1]

nothing but a short post to mention a small fragment of the nn+ set that took place during the tot festival held in knot gallery on the 26th & 27th of june.
nn+ turned to be the ‘line-up’ of nektarios (a strange attractor record store), nicolas (πτώματα κάτω από το κρεββάτι records), kostis kilymis (organized music from thessaloniki). with nektarios we feel grateful somehow to mihalis kyratsous & dimitra lazaridou-hatzigoga as they dropped the idea for this set and turned to be great chacnce to do finally a duo we longed nearly 18 years to do since the last days of the greek grind/noisecore scene’s heyday back in early 90′s. back then he as a member of the grind group ‘industry of crashed conceptions’ i as ‘sickness’. then wishing a kinda whitehouse tone generator noise thing that never materialized now something we liked much more to be honest as we had a host of participants like otomo hava, ilan manouach, e.a.

also just for the history and the arhives of absurd completists…during the set were smashed some 150 looper cds. for the record the cd was to be an edition of 500, i ordered back then some 600 sleeves and anastasis (of the small music theatre fame) helped w/ the cd order/ manufacturing. well i only left athens for a 4 days visit to budapest upon landin’ back the 500 cd ordered had turned to a 1000 cd one and luckily instead of 600 sleeves approx for the first time in absurd’s history had some close to 700 printed. not sure how the final edition was however some 20-30 were smashed during the old fashioned donkeys electrograph performance 4 years ago. some 100-150 were thrown into a recycle bin outside my house and some 100-120 more or less left were smashed during the nn+ thing. since then was too bored to print again sleeves for the remaining copies you see.

same holds for the tasos stamou ‘infant’ cd. by the time it was out some 60 – 70 copies were left without sleeve. if am not mistaken when the sleeves we initially bought were some 400-450 for an edition of 500-520 cds. so for 4 years too they were collecting dust in my bedroom and as i need room now for more records of my collection i simply recycled them. guess there’s more tasos stamou to be recycled sooner or later….

enjoy
