on echomusic: Chris Lynn – Remote Partings

not much info on this latest echomusic download, but on first hearing it seems to be an excellent and magnificently sensitive compilation of found-sound treatments. Lend an ear:

on echomusic: Dimitris Kamarotos & Nikos Kyriazopoulos – Humans in standing wave harmonies

This is a live recording of a concert that took place in Knot Gallery in Athens 05/13/2012. Performing with modular synthesizer systems and electromechanic devices the artists built long duration soundscapes of sine waves, mechanical noise and electronic pulsers. The audience had the choice to move in the place perceiving the sound in different timbre and level.
Along with the sound performance, Vassilis Koundouris (www.studio19st.com ) manipulated the system’s output signal producing video projections of Chladni Patterns

on echomusic: Raitis Upens – Gailezers

Raitis Upens is an experimental music sound artist from Riga, Latvia in Eastern Europe. Since 2010 he works in the fields of musique concrète, field recordings and minimalism genres. He is also one half of duo Phonic Psychomimesis. Current interests are searching for new sampling possibilities, real-time mixing techniques and concrete sound improvisation.

The recordings for this release are taken in Hospital “Gaiļezers”. The chosen location is accidental or logically determined by accident, but recordings as such are more or less intentional. In them there is voice cacophony, snoring patients, lifts and special ambient frequencies, captured with a hidden recorder while the artist’s body explored with unknown devices.  The aim was to extend few aesthetic atmospheres not only by looping, but continuously reproducing or recreating essential properties. The recording comprises of five simple parts built up from approximately hundred cuts…

on echomusic: Arturas Bumšteinas – To Ostatnia Niedziela

-

ok, here’s for the, now monthly, echomusic release. This one’s from the, unbeknown to us prior to this, Lithuanian artist, Arturas Bumšteinas. The release, whose title actually translates to ‘This is the Last Sunday’, is a live recording of a solo performance of his in Warsaw -last one in a series of Sunday concerts organized in the particular venue between 2009 and 2012, as echomusic informs us. ‘To Ostatnia Niedziela’ is also a title of a world-famous tango composed by Jerzy Petersburski in Warsaw (1935), and a two-second fragment of this tango was apparently used in the end of Bumšteinas’ performance. Bumšteinas performs here using bowed bicycle wheels, tone generators and a tape player.

on echomusic: Roel Meelkop – 17 M

-

roel meelkop is yet another favourite of this website, what with his astounding solo recordings on intransitive recordings and elsewhere, or with his contributions as a member of kappote muziek, goem and THU20, he’s rarely failed to tantalize the somewhat demanding ears of this fine establishment. Now he has another offering, a digital release on echomusic this time. Roel says of this one that it marks a rare instance where he’s allowed older recorded material to infiltrate the making of the music, thus creating a conversation of sorts between his past and present. Also, this seems to have given him the opportunity to work more spontaneously than usual, which never seems to be a bad idea.

on echomusic: If, Bwana – Moose y Squirrel

yiorgis sakellariou has certainly been keeping us busy lately, what with his prolific output as an artist (see previous post), or his field-recording adventures which he regularly posts us to include in this page’s journal. But mostly these days, thanks to his re-energized efforts in promoting other peoples’ music through his fine echomusic label. And who are we to complain when this month’s freely downloadable edition turns out to contain the work of none other than noise-below favourite Al Margolis?

Margolis’ If, Bwana project is one of the consistently more reliable entities in the area that can with very little accuracy be labeled as “modern composition”. No room for any high-brow bullshit here though, this is sonic alchemy pure and simple. Lend an ear :

on echomusic: Luis Antero – Postais Sonoros

the echomusic net label presents Luis Antero’s ‘Postais Sonoros’ (Field recordings from Portugal). In which Antero (field recordist, net label and radio program curator), offers 40 sonic post cards from various locations of Portugal:

more info and high quality wav files here

When we come to a country or a location in a country, we see in their local cards locations precious documents of those places, testimonies of memory over time, whose noble function is to put in front of our eyes, the special moment that led us to visit a particular place. The cards are so the testimony of that passionate passage who can take us, over and over, to recall the places where we always look for them. And if the cards were also sound, carrying in its shape the sounds we heard and shared in that special place?

This work aims, precisely, to try to give an answer to this question. We want to listen to as a randomized collection of sound cards of certain zones of Portugal, from Serra da Estrela to Lisbon.

There wasn’t a logical criterion in the presentation of these 40 tracks. Just the idea of seeing, in a random way, villages, towns, cities, mountains or sea cards from this huge (although geographically small) country, “planted by the sea” and its rich and deep sound identities.

on echomusic: Darius Ciuta – H-CS

echomusic is turning quite prolific since it morphed into a net-label right about the turn between 2011 and 2012 -it seems we should be expecting something from them every month or so from now. Now, a lot of people might go straight into a quantity vs. quality mode following news like that, easy listening, y’know? Well, judging from this release by Darius Ciuta, easily digestible and unchallenging sound material is not something we should expect anytime soon from the curatorial hand of label-manager yiorgis sakellariou. This of course spells good news in my book.

H-CS uses field recordings to create something other than a passive appreciation of landscape. It’s a very subtle game, and one best not explained in words, but you can get an idea from the samples below, and if you think you have the time to delve into it, then there’s always the full release just one click away. Ciuta has been receiving notice in the past year within field-recording circles, and for good reason i might say, judging from the excerpts below. Designed for headphones, or some situation approximating headphone use:

on echomusic: Martiensgohome – Tétraèdre

second net-release from the re-invigorated echomusic label…

Martiensgohome is a quartet of sorts, four persons playing music together.
This album of theirs, Tétraèdre was specially composed at the request of the radio-show of the same name on Radio Panik (le tetraedre). For this piece, Martiensgohome decided to change their normal methods of work and do something unusual for them, each one recording a piece for another one of them to reinterpret. The end-result is somewhere between a remix-chain and a collaborative work. The game of course is then to guess who did what.

more info and .wav quality downloads here

Founded in April 1996, martiensgohome is a sound collective whose primary outlet is radio. Operating at the crossroad between radio drama and improvised electronic music, it has been present on the airwaves of Brussels, on Radio Campus, without interruption since its first broadcast. Instant soundscape, musique concrete sauvage, martiensgohome’s music is first and foremost a celebration of the sound spectrum, from the roughest noise to the tiniest resonance. Through line-up changes, regular or occasionnal guests, special projects, challenges, game pieces, the collective has tried and maintained a constant renewal, justifying its longevity.

echomusic is now a netlabel; first release by Strotter Inst.

the fine fine echomusic label, run by one yiorgis sakellariou (aka: mecha/orga), is now officially a netlabel. Changing with the times, yiorgis decided this was the way to go for now, feeling he could better serve the music through the vast information avenues we now call the internet. Gone are the cdr editions, hello mp3, flac and wav. All downloads are free.

now for their first net release,

which is an album from Strotter Inst. (swiss-born Christoph Hess) who creates music through the use of old, modified Lenco turntables, the sounds of which he conjures and manipulates. His music is electric and repetitive, but at the same time presents a mechanistic, fuzzy, unclean and unstable sound. His echomusic release, Widerhall, is a compilation of live recordings that took place between March and June 2010, during the tour of Strotter Inst. in the United States.
