as the editor for this site, i sometimes (more often recently, truth be told) get to write bits about my own activities as well. It always feels strange, i tell myself i shouldn’t be taking the spotlight, but then usually i just say fuck it. ok, most of the people in the uk who give a damn about this kind of music have heard by now that jason kahn will be touring the land for the better part of february, playing in most of the obvious places, and some other ones a bit out the way as well. One of those other ones is the city of oxford, where he will be joined by the Albion Players, i.e. Stephen Cornford, Patrick Farmer, Sarah Hughes. Opening for the same bill, will be oxford’s Lawrence Dunn on laptop, and our very own Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga in a solo zither set.

ok, this is what a proper label headquarters looks like when you’ve got new releases coming up (and probably much worse, mind you). You definitely have no space for yourself to sleep on the bed (let alone your dog, cat, or, god-forbid, your girlfriend). And this is apparently what more mars‘ hq looks like these days, as they have not one but two new editions on their 3″ nous series. All the better for us!

the first one being an improvised duo from US-born, Berlin-based sax/clarinet player Chris Heenan and our very own zither player, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, while the second one is a construction that resulted from an audio/visual collaboration that Yiannis Tsirikoglou had with artist Mariska De Groot.

Chris is an improviser/composer/promoter/member in various groupings. Dimitra is best known for her collaboration with Ferran Fages in ap’strophe, but more and more these days as a solo artist as well. Yiannis is known for his part in the Thessaloniki-based band, eventless plot, but has been lately spending time on his own in The Hague.

at the opportunity of Berlin-based Tisha Mukarji’s visit to London, a trio performance featuring Mukarji (inside piano), Angharad Davies (prepared violin), and Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga (zither) – a meeting of three sensitive musicians in music of delicate poise and warm elegance. electronics musician Giannis Kotsonis presents an electroacoustic/noise suite under his ‘Sister Overdrive’ alias, while zither player Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga “graduates” from her duo with Ferran Fages, ‘ap’strophe’, to give us her uncompromising solo debut in the form of ‘Stroke by Stroke’.

digging deeper, Sister Overdrive’s ‘Honey’ is made out of electroacoustic and concrete sources, thickly processed through Kotsonis’ laptop to produce and unfold a most engaging sequence of events. On ‘Honey’, his work thrives on harsh textures and elemental qualities of sound, offering in the process a most immersive and rich abstract work.

‘Stroke by Stroke’ is not for the faint of heart either. Those expecting gentle plucking to emerge from her zither will be surprised, to say the least. Chatzigoga uses objects, preparations, e-bows and other tools to extract large and confronting soundscapes from her instrument, and here she lays down, track by track, different combinations of techniques, contrasted with each other in the context of the album while at the same time laying them against the ambient sounds of the city -which she sublty allows to slip through to the recording. What results is a poetic and suggestive work that serves as the best introduction yet to Chatzigoga’s soundworld.

Johannes Bergmark: Γεννημένος στην Στοχόλμη, ειδικεύεται στην ενίσχυση κάθε έιδους παραφερνάλια αλλά κατασκεβάζει επίσης δικά του πειραματικά μουσικά όργανα όλα από φτηνά υλικά και found objects. ‘Εχει μία απόλυτη D.I.Y. προσέγγιση στον ήχο η οποία τον έχει ταιδέψει σε 23 χώρες. Στο Random Festival θα συμπράξει με την Tippi Tillvind.

Tippi Tillvind: Μία Σουηδή που δεν έχει καμία φιλοδοξία να γίνει επαγγελματίας καλλιτέχνης αλλά ούτε και να κάνει μουσική από χόμπυ μιας και πιστεύει πως και οι δύο περιπτώσεις την περιορίζουν καλλιτεχνικά! Το σετ αποτελεί μέρος των δρώμενων που θα εναλλάσονται στους χώρους της έκθεσης, για την οποία θα στηθεί ειδική κατασκευή, όπου θα εκτίθενται έργα καλλιτεχνών που σχετίζονται με/ εμπνέονται από το έργο του Raymon Roussel, Locus Solus.

Στα πλαίσια της εγκατάστασης στο μουσείο Μπενάκη θα υπάρχει επίσης από την ίδια και το ηχητικό υλικό ‘temporary landscapes’, το οποίο θα μπορεί να το ακούσει κανείς καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης (24 σεπτεμβρίου-10 οκτωβρίου).

an ambitious little festival coming up next week in athens…

tot 1.0 evolved from the coinciding visits of ferran fages and grundik kasyansky in athens, greece. of course it grew up to be a lot more than that, it will feature performances of said musicians together and with local musicians, a solo performance of nikos veliotis on piano, a sax and electronics set from ilan manouach & george axiotis and a kind-of “dj set” from members of this site opening the festival
