the snow’s piling up mighty deep, i currently have a blanket wrapped around my shoulders, and a friend of mine was just telling me we’re only 1/3 through the winter! ack!

but it’s not a bad time to be in the studio.here’s what i’m up to:

collections of sounds, songs & moments (tin cans, wind, birds, machines, voice).
spliced tape and fleshy tangles
sing-song coin-operated nursery rhymes from pressed-tin automata,
yeah yeah yeah
(hope hope hope)
it’s a project i’m calling ‘cabinets’

it’s kinda like a band, kinda like just me doing what i do with sound, except now i’m singing songs too. more info/links/yadda yadda here: cabinetsmaker.com

During the month of february 2009, i’ll be writing and recording a new collection
of sounds and songs, wrangling in a few friends of mine along the way.
Several thousand of other folks will be going through a similar effort this coming month
for the RPM challenge. ( http://www.rpmchallenge.org ). Underlying theme seems to be this: just make something dammit!

I’ll also be journaling, photographing, taking notes and posting everything throughout the month. if you’re interested in following along, you can do so here:
http://cabinetsmaker.com/february the blog section is oddly kinda subtle, scroll down on the page and look for the link.

sounds & songs from -another- upcoming cabinets release, “wilderness” (something, in contrast, i’ve been working on for *way* too long) can be listened to here: http://www.myspace.com/cabinetsmaker

okay, that’s more than enough web linkage for now.
be well, and may the frozen month of february be a productive one!
make something!

-ven/cabinets

—

The movie No More Smoke Signals (directed by Fanny Bräuning; music by TK) has been awarded with the Prix de Soleure, the first prize of the Solothurn Film Festival. It has also been nominated for the Swiss Film Prize in the category Best Documentary and has won the Zurich Film Prize (Best Documentary) a few weeks back. We are excited about this success and look forward to seeing the movie opening in cinemas on April 16th.

I am pleased to announce the release of Pocket Size Isolationism, a collaboration with Utah Kawasaki on the Esquilo label:

Tomas Korber / Utah Kawasaki
Pocket Size Isolationism
Esquilo Records 012

Notes from the label:

First ever collaboration and recording between swiss Tomas Korber and japanese Utah Kawasaki recorded back in 2006. Hardly categorizable it probably stands as the most peculiar release by any of these artists revealing an unclear mix of different dimensions sourced from a multilayered fragile interconnected system of guitars, microphones and electronics. While raising many questions, especially regarding control, choice of sounds, structure and balance, its playback is a defying and uneasy experience. Limited to 200 copies.

in the meantime i will be playing at the ad libitim festival in warsaw october 21, interpreting scores by cardew, feldmann, wolff and lamonte young in the humbling company of phil durrant, eddie prevost, john tilbury and tetuzi akiyama. i and tetuzi will also play as duet in poznan on the 27th october. after that its to berlin for rehearsals for djalma primordial science’s return by overwhelming demand to potsdam’s UNIDRAM festival. this time ephia possesses herself the animus of lucia joyce in “mirrorminded curiositease” www.djalma.com in which i have the challenge of further decoding phonemes into sonomemes, maybe making finnegan’s wake’s wake even more complicated and after rigors of microsonic sensual deconstruction perhaps even a bit more enjoyable even if by accident. soon after that i will be searching out new digs here in poznan. a new exhibit of my drawings should take place in torun in december or maybe in january but it is just a question of when. otherwise it’s back to teaching and i hope next semester i can seduce the local university to accept my proposal to tell everyone what american literature is really (not) all about.
it will be an interesting new year, i suspect.
let me know
