absurd #84 ‘bye bye butterfly’

yep, title’s taken from pauline oliveros’s same titled track and couldn’t find better for the final absurd release.
so below’s some info on the upcoming final absurd thing full schedule / details are to follow later but announce the first details of the absurd #84 scrapbook in case anyone’s interested in crashin’ in xanthi on december the 4th.

the idea is as follows, a final release or at least an effort for a final release but as i’ve never had a straight online release (perhaps the thu 20 piece might be an exception or an ‘odyssey’ depending on the angle you see it) thought as a nice idea to set up a mini fest to say goodbye to fellow coneptualists and end absurd there and at the same time this mini fest to be an a release in process. that simple.

so as i don’t wanna beat about the bush as mentioned earlier on saturday the 4th at the ’spiti politismou’ of f.e.x. in xanthi this ‘release’ / adieau absurd mini fest will take place.
further schedule details are to follow as 90% a date in thessaloniki on friday the 3rd is also possible to take place if the pals up there find a place to set it up.

the line-up so far includes:

- leif elggren (as leif elggren) & bill kouligas (a.k.a. family battle snake) (live electronics)

- jerome noetinger

- blood stereo (including ellka reign nyoukis?)

- sudden infant

- adieAUX   a special aux performance as a goodbye thing that during the process of absurd #84 we’ll publish the final release absurd #85 but details on this performance will folow later)

- ilan manouach (sax & electronics) / george axiotis (live electronics) / chris carras (dj) no comments simply my heroes!

this is it so far.
further details to follow also details regarding how to reach xanthi from various places from greece or around the balkans.

love & noise

absurd’s contact (email) address has changed

in the biggest fuck-up in a series of major fuck-ups (see below about our non-functioning mailing lists), absurd has lost its long-standing email address.

long story short, the absurd _ |at| _ otenet _ gr address is no longer working. if you happened to send an email to this address in the past month or so, chances are it has failed to reach us.

please direct all future communication to:

nicolas.malevitsis _ |at| _ gmail _ com

the old address may eventually return, but it seems best to keep an independent host for now

apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused

Zoologikokipologia

intervention in a zoo by artist Braco Dimitrijevic (from a recent blog post)

intervention in a zoo by artist Braco Dimitrijevic (from a recent zoologikokipologia blog post)

Zoologikokipologia is a greek language blog, recently set up by Thanasis Chondros & Alexandra Katsiani. The content revolves around the politics and the philosophy of zoos, focusing on their symbolism and their relation to/reflection of human civilization. From what i’ve seen so far, it promises to be more poignant than cooky (though with a little bit of both thrown in the mix)

Suspended Instants

while in many places in the world, music-loving communities have learned to make-do with little & be self-sufficient, we should not forget (& respect) the fact that there are some venues around the world that have also earned rightful support from their respective states and governments. Sadly though, in the past few years, we have witnessed a wave of withdrawal of public funding around the world that greatly affects these initiatives. The situation gets more serious as these are usually the very venues that form the backbone of the international community, providing stable stages and nurturing strong centres of cultural exchange.

with all the above in mind, the news that has been circulating in the past week is this:

(from les Instants Chavirés, Montreuil, France -flip over your improv cds, quite a few of them were recorded there)

On Thursday July 2nd 2009 we were shocked to learn that the balance of the operational subsidy allocated to our Association by the General Council of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department had been slashed by no less than 25,000€ – a drop of more of 19%. This in addition to a 7,000€ cut in our municipal subsidy (at the beginning of the year, the town of Montreuil had announced a reduction of 15,000€, 7000€ being the amount eventually decided upon by the end of June). This means that we have lost 32,000€ in 2009.

The lack of funding has forced us to cancel our Autumn season of concerts, video projections and exhibitions, in its entirety. Even maintaining a strict minimum of programmed events would lead to a budgetary deficit that we simply could not contemplate.

We have serious questions regarding how the Council reached its decision, and what factors might have influenced it in so doing, and to date do not know on what opinions or analyses the said decision was based. We also deplore that the decision was taken so late.

It would seem that the Department has deliberately adopted a policy designed to weaken our Association, resulting in a slow asphyxiation that will put the entire future of the Instants Chavirés in jeopardy. How are we to plan for a 2010 season in such conditions?

“Art must be where it’s indispensible, which means everywhere” – Claude Lévêque, artist

We maintain that an intermediary cultural space like the Instants Chavirés is an essential complement to existing institutions, and that it has made a major contribution to the diversity of the cultural offer, playing an essential role in discovering and promoting art for over 18 years.

Does the Seine-Saint-Denis Department still have the political will to maintain an internationally acclaimed artspace dedicated to contemporary creation, however modest it may be?

We demand the setting up of a round table with all our institutional partners to rehabilitate a relation which is clearly deteriorating. It is essential to redefine the financial framework together, regarding the unique nature of our artistic commitment as well as our geographical and structural specificity.

We urge you then to sign the online petition (http://instants.mollo.fr), and write to Claude Bartolone, President of the General Council of Seine-Saint-Denis, and / or to the Mayor of Montreuil, Dominique Voynet, to inform them of what the Instants Chavirés represents in the local, national and international cultural landscape, and express your own commitment to the lasting nature of this project.

You can address your correspondence directly to us at the following email address soutiens[at]instantschavires.com, or by regular mail to Instants Chavirés, 7 Rue Richard Lenoir 93100 Montreuil-France. We undertake to forward it to the parties concerned.

Please circulate this communiqué as widely as you can, amongst everyone you know. Thank you.

taste of the unnamed

unnamed

the Unnamed Music Festival was one of the more rewarding initiatives of the first half of this year. Currated by another timbre’s Simon Reynell, it was held in mid-june in the cities of London and Leeds and featured an intricate mix of players that reflected its currators tastes as much as it reflected the until-recently imperceptible changes in the waters of improvised music. Some of those players came from the latest wave of London-based improvisers, some were more closely aligned to the EAI school of musicians, a couple of elder statesmen were included for good measure as well. Though on paper things didn’t look too spiky, the sets were full of subtle and rewarding moments. We witnessed strong working groups given ample space to flesh out their music (Tom Chant/Angharad Davies/Benedict Drew/John Edwards and Rhodri Davies/Louisa Martin/Lee Patterson with Lucio Capece filling in for missing members), delicate attempts to beauty (Sebastian Lexer/Aleks Kolkowski and Clive Bell/Matt Milton/Bechir Saade) and two sets full-on risk-taking improvisation (Paul Abbott/Jamie Coleman/Grundik Kasyansky/Ute Kanngiesser & the guns-blazing trio of Keith Rowe/Martin Küchen/Seymour Wright). There was also the duo set of Jez riley French & Patrick Farmer, but this was in Leeds, so i cannot comment.

the main reason for this post is not to bore you with my one-line reflections, but to point to the way of a download page that is now up at the another timbre webpage:

http://www.anothertimbre.com/downloads.html

in this page, and until september, you’ll be able to listen and download extracts from the music performed at the festival (from all but one of the sets that took place). Some very interesting music there, and quite different at places from the way i remember it -the workings of human senses never cease to confound.

some music blogs

in case you missed the mention, there is now a blog cataloguing past activities of absurd & related entities (nicolas’s pre-absurd tape imprint, etc). in it you can find high-quality mp3 uploads of oop releases, as well as odds-and-ends that haven’t seen the light of day before (like live shows, raw material & private releases). quite different from the regular absurd catalogue found in this page

you can find the blog at:
http://allnoisesswelltogetherinlandscapes.blogspot.com/

another new blog, this time focusing on obscure greek underground releases (though might only be one of possible directions this blog will take):
http://excretemusic.blogspot.com/

last but not least is a blog set up by costis drygianakis. most known in these circles from his duo with nikos veliotis that absurd put out back in the early days, his ‘edo’ label put out the first ‘cranc’ cd, but his activities as a musician & music writer have mostly been known inside greece.

in this blog he’s set up (in greek) he’s focusing so far on local folk (& beyond) recordings, offering single tracks from recordings that usually fly below the radar & coupling them with detailed and valuable historical and musicological information.

a very pleasant surprise:
