xanthi infos and visit guide

so here’s a small guide to our city, some basic info at least regarding accomodation and transportation in order to get to the city.

in any case you need help regarding how to organize an excursion to other places of the province or nearby provinces dont’ hesitate to email and ask for help. also should you wish a small mini tour around old town and learn its history and bit of xanthi’s history perhaps can be arranged a mini tour with pashalis xanthopoulos -one of the friends who run the folk museum. usually this tour is done on wednesday’s but being the fest occasion another one can take place on sunday morning. but drop a line to inquire and then we’ll see if we can arrange it or not. nearly all of us know the tour almost by heart so don’t hesitate to ask us to show you around our city.

now should you wish an around the province tour then drop a line to see if can be arranged something with local tour operators.

city maps can be found here www.xanthimap.info
you can also get infos from these sites of the city

www.cityofxanthi.gr

www.xanthi.gr
plus here you can download bilingual (greek / english) city and other activities guides.  sadly a bit outdated (from 2005) but the basic infos are all there)
www.xanthi.gr/index.php?tmp=2&path=1131
a couple of useful phones are of the
city hospital (+30) 25410 47100
the bus station  (+30) 25410 22684
the train station (+30) 25410 22581
taxis  (+30) 25410 29977, 72801-3

on how to get there:

greece

by car
the distance from athens is 736 km, from thessaloniki is 221 km, patras 717 km, ioannina 570 km

by bus
you can get the bus (ktel) from athens or thessaloniki to xanthi (of course there are buses from other cities of the north and northeastern greece to xanthi, e.g. from serres, drama, alexandroupoli)
from athens you can call and book bus seat here at the xanthi kiosk (located at the kifissos bus station  09.00 – 19.00 phone : (+30) 210 5132084
from thessaloniki you can get info / book here (+30) 2310 526526 http://www.ktel-thes.gr/
from xanthi to thessaloniki / athens/ etc here’s the bus station’s phone (+30) 25410 22684  http://ktelxanthis.gr/

by train
perhaps the easiest and cheapest way. either from athens (max around 9hrs by the intercity or the express that changes in thessaloniki and you get the thessaloniki – istanbul train or another intercity), or thessaloniki. it is highly recommended if you like sightseeing too as the part around the nestos river is a trully magical experience doing it by train! you can check timetables, trains, hours, cities, etc here www.trainose.com/content/article/205/letter/X

by plane
the airport that is closer to xanthi is the one of kavala (located near the city of hrysoupoli). from greece you can get a flight from athens to it not sure if there are airports that you can get a plane and fly to kavala at this time of the year. Olympic airways flies mostly to kavala www.olympicair.com and also athens airways as well www.athensairways.com. however you can check low cost flights too www.flylowcostairlines.org/ or you can get  a plane to thessaloniki and then there by car / bus / train to xanthi.

from kavala airport to xanthi
here’s the big deal… at the moment there’s no bus neither from kavala to the airport nor from xanthi to the airport as far as i’m concerned. regarding xanthi am sure. so the only way to go back & forth is car & taxi. you can get a taxi from the airport to kavala and get the bus there however this will cost more or less 20-30 euros (perhaps might be less / more not sure never done it). from the airport to xanthi usually the fare is around 45-55 euros. knowing the problem as lots of friends we face it often for the fest we have asked a very close friend who owes a taxi for far better prices. so you can call  alekos at (+30)6944886532 to arrange transportation back and forth. if you call just tell him you are for the fest. otherwise you can rent a car at the airport at the kiosks inside of labels like hertz, etc. so can also drive around the provinces of eastern macedonia & thrace while for the fest.
also here’s the airport’s site / useful info www.hcaa-eleng.gr/kavala.htm

from alexandroupoli
you can also try the airport of alexandroupoli. located at the province of evros (named after the evros river that is the natural border between greece and turkey (& western (greece) / eastern (turkey) thrace, just for the history the northern part is in bulgaria)). mention it so in case you wanna take a trip around thrace.
useful info: airport www.alxd.gr/index.htm , should you wish you can rent a car at the airport or online at www.rent-a-car-in-greece.com/thraki/greek.htm
to get infos on how to get a bus from alexandroupoli to xanthi you can call at the bus station here (+30)2551026479 or you can check the trainose site for trains from alexandroupoli to xanthi www.trainose.com
you can also get a flight to kavala, rent a car for the weekend or more and depart from alexandroupoli. there’s lots of sightseeing in thrace, lots of activities from trekking, climbing, rafting, birdwatching, blah blah blah to sites (archeological, byzantine, muslim, etc), museums, etc… you can google infos or visit sites such as e.g ‘thrace, the land of orpheus’ (http://alex.eled.duth.gr/english/index.htm) that have collected bilingual infos, etc.

abroad

an easy tip would have been a flight to thessaloniki and then by car / train / bus to xanthi. same holds if you are by bus or by car travelling. if by car at thessaloniki you get the via egnatia  and in more or less 2 – 2 1/2 you are at xanthi.
also as the borders with bulgaria are now open you can come via bulgaria too. notable the zlatograd city that is close to the border with xanthi and there’s the new open road with it you can check here for infos but also for bus lines from and to greece or from sofia to zlatograd / xanthi http://zlatograd.kayabg.com/files_engl/transport_engl.html
you can also ride on a bus of a tour operator that usually trip from bulgaria to xanthi at low prices. tour operators of both countries arrange tours by buses back & forth almost daily.

by train
it can be the balkan flexipass that you can travel around the balkan and get a ticket for a few days, a week or a month www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/balkan-flexipass/discounts-and-pricing.html
www.europrail.net/buypasses/balkan_flexipass.cfm
or use the interail that works somehow the same way
www.interrail.net/

by plane
as mentioned above or check flights to kavala (kva) or thessaloniki (skg) from various sites such as www.flylowcostairlines.org, www.airtickets.gr, etc. etc.

from turkey

if you chance to istanbul for the cultural city of europe events or for a visit and wanna visit xanthi for the festival you can keep the same way. by bus as there are more than plenty or greek / turk tour operators doing trips back and forth. or you can check here the trains timetables to greece and xanthi specifically www.tcdd.gov.tr/tcdding/avrupa_ing.htm there’s also the train line between greece & turkey (thessaloniki – istanbul). also by plane of course and if i am not mistaken there are flights to kavala as well besides the ones for thessaloniki. another means of transport is by taxi something that happens usually too both from greece to istanbul or vice versa used sometime for a daily trip or not. usually from xanthi to istanbul and vice versa is some 3-4 hours and a taxi price can be arranged though usually is around 300-500 euros.

accomodation

so here’s info on the city’s hotels. inside the city are elena, orfeas, xanthippeio, dimokritos, elisso (former xenia hotel), those are located downtown and near the old town, the distance from the hotels to the spiti politismou that the fest is taking place is maximum 15′. hotel paris is a bit more far but also close to the city’s downtown.  the rest are on the brinks of the city. nestos and motel natassa are close to the train station and you’ll need a taxi to get to the city unless you don’t mind walking as is an almost 25′ walk from the hotels to the city center.

for ‘bye bye butterfly’ we have made an arrangement with the orfeas hotel (25410 20121) which is located at the heart of the city’s center and you can get the following prices single : 30 euros, 2ble : 48 euros, 3ple : 58 just mention upon booking that you are for the fex / pakethra december festival

you can download a pdf. file with all the province’s hotels (including the livaditis fall too) here www.xanthi.gr/files/hotels2008.pdf
