catalan electronics/turntable/guitar master ferran fages has a new album on ‘organized music from thessaloniki‘. This one doesn’t follow the dissonant and disjointed paths of his previous guitar albums, but rather brings together his careful control of resonance and feedback (as showcased in his recent work on ‘l’innomable’) in a striking suite of nocturnal six-string explorations.

athens-based artists unan (chris chondropoulos) and nikos kyriazopoulos, have a new split tape out on noise, a few decks below (this very website that is, the tape is actually co-produced by organized music from thessaloniki and a question of re_entry). The two sides contain each artist’s idiosyncratic take on the subject of bird-song. Unan offers a little musique concrete gem, built from the base up from re-purposed old vinyl, while Kyriazopoulos takes the quasi-mimetic path (though doesn’t limit himself to it) using his arsenal of analog electronics.

to add insult to injury, they have decided to stage a release party of sorts this friday, in the shape of a double-bill concert at knot gallery, athens. Featuring kyriazopoulos, and local experimental band xysm, of which chris is a proud member, this gig will be a nice opportunity to catch up with some of athens’ more forward-looking experimentalists, and to warm up for what looks to be a busy and noisy weekend.

O Lasse Marhaug, γεννημένος το 1974, είναι ένας από τους πιο δραστήριους μουσικούς της Νορβηγικής noise σκηνής. Έχει συνθέσει μουσική και έχει συμπράξει σε πάνω από 200 cd, βινύλια και κασέτες, και έχει εμφανιστεί σε φεστιβάλ ανά τον κόσμο. Πέρα από το σόλο project του, ο Marhaug παίζει τακτικά με τους Jazkamer, Nash Kontroll, DEL και Testicle Hazard ενώ προηγούμενα του σχήματα αποτελούν οι Origami Replica και Lasse Marhaug Band. Έχει συνεργαστεί με διάφορους καλλιτέχνες, στο χώρο του noise, της πειραματικής μουσικής, της jazz, του rock και του extreme metal και έχει παράγει ήχο για θεατρικές παραστάσεις, εγκαταστάσεις και video. Ο No God Ritual δομεί τις υποβλητικές αφηγήσεις του επάνω σε ένα υπόστρωμα σκοτεινών και στέρεων drones, από τα οποία ξεπετάγονται παραμορφωμένοι κιθαριστικοί θόρυβοι, concrète ήχοι, feedback και ψύγματα κρουστών. Οι Balinese Beast (Γιώργος Αξιώτης και Ιλάν Μανουάχ) μοιάζει να έχουν βαλθεί να προσδιορίσουν την πιο σύντομη απόσταση ανάμεσα στη  σιωπή και τον εκκωφαντικό θόρυβο, και το αντίστροφο. Οπλισμένοι με free jazz σαξόφωνα, σπιτικά electronics, effects και samples δημιουργούν μινιατούρες από feedback και άγρια, χαοτικά cut-ups που μπλέκουν την πανκ ενέργεια με την αυτοσχεδιαστική πρακτική, σε μια περιπλάνηση στα άκρα του ηχητικού φάσματος. Μετά από ένα αιχμηρό πρώτο LP και μια split κασσέτα με τους Dieter Müh, μόλις κυκλοφόρησαν το επτάιντσο Soft Offerings.

second net-release from the re-invigorated echomusic label…

Martiensgohome is a quartet of sorts, four persons playing music together.
This album of theirs, Tétraèdre was specially composed at the request of the radio-show of the same name on Radio Panik (le tetraedre). For this piece, Martiensgohome decided to change their normal methods of work and do something unusual for them, each one recording a piece for another one of them to reinterpret. The end-result is somewhere between a remix-chain and a collaborative work. The game of course is then to guess who did what.

Founded in April 1996, martiensgohome is a sound collective whose primary outlet is radio. Operating at the crossroad between radio drama and improvised electronic music, it has been present on the airwaves of Brussels, on Radio Campus, without interruption since its first broadcast. Instant soundscape, musique concrete sauvage, martiensgohome’s music is first and foremost a celebration of the sound spectrum, from the roughest noise to the tiniest resonance. Through line-up changes, regular or occasionnal guests, special projects, challenges, game pieces, the collective has tried and maintained a constant renewal, justifying its longevity.

Mai Pen Rai is an edition of two releases in one, or how two random recordings of a travelogue fit together and after a four year journey are finally released…

the first and the third track of the record capture the experience of Maya Lavda in the summer 2008 during a trip to Bali, where, while shooting with her video camera she noticed frog sounds behind a closed door which she followed to record with her camera. Revisited after the trip, these sounds revealed themselves fitting for a mantra-like locked groove record.

the second track comes from orila’s journey in Thailand over the summer of 2009. Following an after-storm quest for the sound – that a permanent resident jokingly referred to as the sounds produced by water buffaloes – the true origin revealed itself within a scene of majestic nature. In remembrance of this experience, every copy of this release is accompanied by a Thai sky lantern.

as the passion for the frogs was growing both in orila and rekem we decided to unite these findings in the form of a 7″ cut on a 12” plate. This way, these recordings would not only remind us of the actual journey(s), but also the ideas around which a substantial part of our lives evolved through the last four years.

And they lived happily ever after
