is a hub for experimental music & its by-products. it aims to promote the activities of the greek experimental/underground (or whatever one might call it) music scene, as well as its various links internationally.
socrates martinis, best known in these parts from his audio projects (absurd #38, absurd #72 and absurd #79), had a small paperback book released some weeks ago on editions Farfoulas (Athens, Greece). It is a beautiful bilingual edition, available locally as well as from drone records’ mailorder
the moremars team website has a new edition or their ‘random’ e-zine up. Plus it’s on a new, more streamlined and updateable format. Keep it coming guys

In August 2010, I was artist-in-residency at Polymer culture factory in Tallinn, Estonia. During the residency I made several field recording sessions and some of the captured sounds were used in concerts I played in while touring the Baltic countries.
Tallinn is a tourist city, especially the center, the old medieval town. Nonetheless, it is also a very “user friendly” and cozy place for walking and exploring. I was near the seaside, hundreds of meters away from the harbor but the hum of the machines from the ships, combined with distant traffic noise, created a deep drone. On top of that, the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves of a tree and the occasional seagull and other birds’ sounds made an attractive sonic atmosphere. It was characteristic Tallinn ambience witch soon became very familiar –and pleasant- for my ears…

another gem from orila. hidden behind the insanely special edition made out of forged copper plates, industrial bronzed screws and black cardbord envelopes, is the first full-length out there to feature the songwriting brilliance of the artist known as Matteus. Unsettling and alienating (though its weird enough in its expressiveness to also alienate folks who think they dig “weird” and “unsettling” music), Matteus’ music is one that would normally just bear the tag of “experimental” on its shoulders, but instead takes one step forward and puts the strange world of human expressivenes and storytelling front and forward. Stories to dive deep into

following on his duo disc with kiko c. esseiva from 2009 (see post here), echomusic releases merino’s solo disc. described as a work that finds beauty in “recording what is not supposed to be : gear failures, death of a PA system, electro-static noise”. building something out of nothing, using the wonders of digital technology for maximum exposure.
ok, this is embarassing, these came out a good 5 or 6 months ago it seems. still, here’s what the triple bath label has been up to since we last dealt with them:
mr. Danielak hails from Poland and deals in otherworldly psychedic abstractions, while 4 + 1 are an Athens-based instrumental outfit (that features more than 4 + 1 musicians in this case, i’m confused).
themis has much more extensive descriptions of these in the label page, as well as mp3 previews of the whole discs. so follow up the links and see what curious things he’s been pimping during the past months
most of the summer months were spent in a weird kind of overheat hibernation, which meant that we let a lot of stuff slip by in the process. in a series of posts we will try to cover some of it. most of them will be spent mentioning the not-so-few records that we’ve let go unnoticed.
first is the “proper” debut by the athens-based duo of Giorgos Axiotis and Efthimis Theodosis, Free Piece of Tape.
this has been out since june actually, on the homegrown thessaloniki label called granny records [more about the label soon].
Free Piece of Tape have been performing for a few years now, and have had their share of handmade tour-merch cdr editions, as well as a purposefully-out-of-character acoustic recording on kukuruku. Here we get a distillation of sorts, with the band offering 8 pieces that range from measured drones and electronics, to a thick stew of manipulated electro-acoustic treatments.
Their music thrives on the face-off between Axiotis’ synth, effect + mixing-board treatments and Theodosis’ impressive arsenal of handmade or repurposed percussion and spring-based instruments. On this album their sounds are at their most restrained and honed-down, though their vision on what they’re capable of is wider than it’s ever been. A most welcome addition to their catalogue, and a good place to measure one’s strengths.
