new discs from kukuruku
two recent offerings from tasos stamou’s label, first one is ‘Two Fields and a Snowflake’ -a recent recording by the athens-based duo of Free Piece of Tape. While the band’s usual palette of sound consists of amplified objects, percussion, electronics and the like, this disc is different since it consists of purely acoustic recordings made in and around a city apartment. One finds folk-tinged percussion and guitar alongside domestic object manipulation, environmental sounds and some mildly claustrophobic natural reverb; delicate colours and an interesting trip along the way.
number 7 in the label’s catalogue is ‘vague’, the duo of Scillia Lorage & Kiko C. Esseiva. Kiko is known from some previous electroacoustic recordings on hinterzimmer, 1000+1 Tilt and echomusic, which ranged from quite good to exquisite. Here we find him in an open collaborative setting with ms. Lorage. Haven’t heard this one yet, but from what i gather it’s largely in the same direction as him previous offerings.
Zoologikokipologia
intervention in a zoo by artist Braco Dimitrijevic (from a recent zoologikokipologia blog post)
Zoologikokipologia is a greek language blog, recently set up by Thanasis Chondros & Alexandra Katsiani. The content revolves around the politics and the philosophy of zoos, focusing on their symbolism and their relation to/reflection of human civilization. From what i’ve seen so far, it promises to be more poignant than cooky (though with a little bit of both thrown in the mix)

Yaroslavl, Russia (field recording mini-series)

The city of Yaroslavl was the last stop of my tour in Russia, in October 2008. Before the concert, I and the other participants of the festival had some free time and a walk along the Volga River was proved to be an excellent suggestion. I was listening to and recording the machine which was being used in the construction of a dock, hammering in long steel stakes in the ground. A rhythmic metallic loop was created, resonating all over the area, as the sound was also reverberating at the other side of the river. My excitement was obvious and so my fellow artists were kind and patient enough to wait for me until the hammering process ended. Of course, the idea of immediately editing the recording and using it in the evening’s performance did cross my mind but I find myself rather unwieldy in these situations. Needless to say though, the specific sample of the recording was finally used in a concert, at Kinky Kong, in Athens, a few months later.
